Sunrise defeat Fairfield in High Scoring Affair

Captain Sunesh Wazid and Sohan Bheer
Sunrise Cricket Club defeated the visiting Fairfield Cricket Club in a high scoring affair to open their 2008 cricket season last weekend at the Baisley Ground in Richmond Hill, Queens.
Scores: Sunrise 239-9 off 30 overs
Fairfield 189-7 off 30 overs
Batting first after calling correctly, Sunrise lost vivacious opener Mark Gomes via the run out route for a duck in the very first over. However, new opener Safraz Samad and Mark A. Gomes added 55 quick runs for the second wicket before the hard hitting Samad was caught at mid off after miss-timing a full toss for 26.
Gomes found a useful partner in his Vikings skipper Mahendra Kanhai as they added 63 for the third wicket to rest the initiative away from the visiting team.
Gomes who batted solidly top score with 69, a knock that included 7 boundaries while Kanhai who hit a four and six made a busy 25.
Sunrise suffered a mini collapse as both Gomes and Kanhai were dismissed in quick succession; Gomes being caught in the covers off Usamah while Kanhai who was a last minute inclusion in the team was caught on the mid wicket boundary off leg-spinner Tawfiq.
Captain Sunesh Wazid with a whirlwind 41 and veteran Ramjit Singh (28) quickly dismissed any hopes the Connecticut boys may have as Sunrise race to a mammoth 239 in just 30 overs.
Bowling for the visitors, Jossie took 3 for 28 while Usamah had 2 for 23.

Fairfield in reply lost opener Muaz with the very first ball, bowled by medium pacer Mickey Lynch for a duck. His opening partner Fisal quickly followed being caught off Vijay Persaud for 3 to leave Fairfield shakily place at 7 for 2 in the 4th over.
Big hitting by Usamah (46 not out), Qarib (37), Jossie (34) and Hanif (29 not out) took Fairfield who never threatens in the game to some respectability as they ended their inning at 189 for 7 when the overs expired.
Mark A. Gomes complete a fine game by picking up 2 for 15 with his off-breaks.

Sunrise to clash with Fairfield in season opener

Sohan Bheer
Sunrise cricket club will draw first blood with Fairfield Cricket Club to open their 2008 cricket season this Saturday May 17, 2008 at the Baisley ground in Queens, New York.

Sunrise's veteran player, Sunildat Ballie who is looking forward to getting the season under way expects a good showing from his team.
“We are an expanding team and have over 40 plus members currently and we will look to get everyone involved during the course of the year but still maintain that competitiveness that follows our reputation,” Ballie stated.

The last time these two teams met, Sunrise scored a comfortable 129 runs victory in a one sided affair but Fairfield promises to avenge their loss with a much stronger and potent lineup.
Expected to lead the way for the Connecticut boys is the hard hitting opening batsman S. Sukesh and the ever reliable B. Sugran. Q. Quarib, A. Ali and B. Jozzy have proven time and again to be difficult customers and they surely would want to take the brunt to the Sunrise attack.
Their bowling, somewhat suspicious, will have their hands full but Quarib who picked up 3 wickets in the last meeting against Sunrise will once again be the spearhead of the attack and he will received support from fast bowlers D. Danish and R. Rafiek.

Sunrise on the other hand will no doubt be feeling good about themselves with a powerful batting line up that features the likes of the two Gomes, Mark and Mark Anthony, Ramjit Singh, Safraz Samad, Sunesh Wazid, Sohan Bheer, Vicky Chin and Freddy Roopchand.
Veteran medium pacer Sunildat Ballie leads a penetrative attack that includes former Guyana under 15 off spinner Tavendra Pooran, Tariq Aziz, Joel Chinsammy and Josh Harbajhan.
Notable omission from the Sunrise team is Vikings Cricket Club captain Mahendra Kanhai who is suffering from a number of lingering injuries.

Game time is 12.30 PM sharp.
